Eyelid Surgery for Ptosis, Ectropion & Entropion

Eyelid surgeries to correct defects are more than just cosmetic. They can help with symptoms like eye irritation, watery eyes, pain, and even improve your vision. If certain eyelid conditions are not corrected, they can also lead to higher incidences of corneal ulcers, eye infections, and increasing vision loss. Many of these eyelid conditions are caused by the natural ageing process, although some can also be caused by disease, injury, or birth defects.

The three main conditions which can be effectively solved with eyelid surgery in Singapore include Ptosis, Ectropion, and Entropion. While treatments like eye lubricants, ointments, artificial tears, and tape can provide temporary relief, surgical interventions are almost always necessary to help correct these defects.

Ptosis

Ptosis is a condition where a patient’s upper eyelid stretches and begins to droop. This may be caused by disease, trauma, congenital defects, side effects from eye surgery, or simply due to ageing. It usually occurs when there is either a weakness of the levator muscle which is responsible for raising the eyelid, or a problem with the nerves connected to the levator muscle.

If left untreated, Ptosis can lead to problems in vision development, amblyopia, or lazy eye. Patients may also experience difficulty blinking, which can lead to irritation, infection, and eye strain.

The best course of treatment for Ptosis is usually corrective surgery conducted by a trained eye doctor in Singapore to tighten and strengthen the levator muscle to lift the eyelid. Treatment methods will differ based on severity of condition and type of Ptosis the patient presents with.

Ectropion

If you find that your eyelids are turning outwards and away from the eye due to a sagging lower eyelid, then you might have Ectropion. Caused by degeneration in the muscles that hold the eyelid tight against the eye, Ectropion can lead to excessive tearing, dry eyes, irritation, and decreased vision.

The chance of Ectropion occurrence increases as you get older. Ageing causes the skin, muscles, and tendons of the lower eyelid to droop and turn outwards. Fortunately, eyelid surgery for Ectropion can be performed as a day surgery to tighten the tendons of the eyelids and restore the structure of the eye.

Ectropion

Similar to Ectropion, Entropion is an eyelid condition that is usually exacerbated by ageing or scarring and is caused by the stretching and weakening of the eyelid tendons and muscles. However in cases of Entropion, the eyelid turns inwards resulting in eyelashes constantly rubbing against the eye creating itchiness, irritation, redness, and rearing.

In more serious instances, Entropion can also lead to mucous discharge, crusting of the eyelashes, and scratching of the cornea. Some patients may try to self-treat the condition by using pieces of tape to pull the lower lid down into the right position to get some temporary relief.

However, eyelid surgery is the only permanent form of treatment for Entropion. Cosmetically, both Entropion and Ectropion surgery can also improve the aesthetics of the eyes by ensuring that the patient’s eyelids do not appear to sag. Functionally, Entropion and Ectropion surgery help treat the many of the symptoms that come with eyelid weakness and sagging and also ensure that the condition does not degenerate further and cause more serious problems.

Eyelids play an extremely important role in managing our eyesight and protecting our vision. They keep dust and dirt away from the eyeballs, keep eyes covered during periods of sleep, and keep eyes moistened by spreading tears over the surface. Unfortunately, over time they can weaken causing both minor and major eye symptoms. However, corrective eyelid surgery has come a long way and can provide a permanent fix for many of these eyelid conditions.
